R&E Foundation Robert G. Leonard Lecture Series
The Robert G. Leonard Memorial Lecture
The Robert G. Leonard Memorial Lecture is presented at the TSHP Annual Seminar under the joint sponsorship of The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The Robert G. Leonard Memorial Fund is a separately endowed fund within the TSHP R&E Foundation with disbursements coming only from investment proceeds. Donations continue to be accepted for this fund and the Foundation hopes to soon be able to support small grants for clinical research projects.
About Robert G. Leonard
Dr. Robert G. Leonard was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 14, 1942. He earned a BS in Pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1966 and a PharmD degree from the University of Kentucky in 1973 where, during his final year, he served as Chief Resident in Pharmacy. Prior to entering the PharmD program, Bob served three years in the U.S. Army, including service as Chief of Pharmacy Services at the U.S. Ireland Army Hospital in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in July 1973 to help develop the PharmD program. He was promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor of Pharmacy with tenure in September 1978.
During his brief academic career, Bob developed clinical service and educational models in Internal Medicine at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital (January 1974 to June 1976) and Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Medical Center (July 1976 to September 1981). He served as the Coordinator of the Clinical Pharmacy Program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio beginning in September 1975. His primary research interest was cardiovascular therapeutics, an area in which he successfully collaborated with colleagues in the basic and medical sciences. In addition, Bob received the Teaching Excellence Award from the UT Austin, College of Pharmacy in 1980.
Bob was active in professional societies and organizations having held the following positions: Member, Task Force on Specialties (APhA); Nominated for Chair, Council of Faculties (AACP); Chair-Designate, SIG on Adult Clinical Pharmacy (ASHP); Chair, Program Committee (CTSHP); and Chair, 1981 Annual Meeting Program Committee (TSHP).
Bob Leonard was devoted to his family with the same intensity that characterized his commitment to his profession. He reserved an inviolable share of his time for his wife, Sheryle, and their two sons, Keith and Wesley. His caring nature and his commitment to excellence touched many; each mourned his death on September 6, 1981.
