Applying Best Practices for Injection Safety: A “How To” Roadmap
Room: Junior Ballroom ABC
UAN: JA4008073-9999-24-209-L05-P/T (CEUs: 0.1)
Using examples of events that have been reported to the ISMP National Medication Errors Reporting Program (ISMP MERP), data from cost-effectiveness research studies, and first-hand experience shifting an organization toward use of RTA products, the faculty will describe the key vulnerabilities when IV medications require manipulation at the bedside that have led to errors and patient harm, show attendees how they can review their own data to compare the cost and safety of manufacturer-prepared RTA products compared to traditional vial-and-syringe products, and illustrate the steps needed to successfully optimize use of RTA products in their organizations.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe three risks associated with preparation and administration of IV medications.
2. Evaluate the cost differential of manufacturer-prepared ready-to-administer (RTA) products versus traditional vial and syringe products.
3. Explain the implementation steps needed to move from traditional vial and syringe products to RTA products.
