TSHP President Jeff Wagner and Executive Director Leah Cody attended the August 12th quarterly meeting of the Texas Pharmacy Congress (TPC) to discuss legislative initiatives for the 2025 Texas legislative session. TPC includes the Deans of Texas Colleges of Pharmacy from Texas A&M, Texas Southern University, Texas Tech, University of Houston, Incarnate Word, University of North Texas, UT Austin, UT El Paso, UT Tyler. It also includes representatives from the Texas Pharmacy Association, Texas Federation of Drug Stores and the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. TSHP shared our main legislative priority, medication histories for high-risk patients. The legislation would require hospital pharmacy staff at acute hospitals with more than 100 beds to obtain an accurate medication profile or list for each high-risk patient upon admission. This patient safety measure has proven successful in reducing medication errors in California, which passed a similar bill in 2018. According to at least two studies, the impact of the law has reduced medication errors. The research demonstrated that medication errors could be reduced by 80 percent when pharmacists or trained technicians obtain medication lists for high-risk patients. A 2023 study found 94% of patients had at least 1 error prevented, and 54% of patients who had medication histories completed had a serious or life-threatening error prevented.
