The Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research & Education Foundation (TSHP R&E Foundation) is proud to announce the recipient of the 2025 Gene Lake Scholarship is Duke A. Cullins.

The Gene Lake Scholarship was established in 2001 in honor of Gene Lake, who served as a member of the R&E Foundation Board of Directors and as Fundraising Chair. Gene received the TSHP Distinguished Service Award and the TSHP Industry Service Award for his support of pharmacy in the West Texas region while working for Abbott Laboratories. Preference is given to students who live in the West Texas ( see map) area Mr. Lake served during his career with Abbott.

"I am a P4 pharmacy student in Lubbock who is eagerly awaiting graduation in May," said Cullins. "I am so excited for the opportunities that lie ahead of me after graduation. I have already began applying for jobs in my home, Lubbock area. I moved here back in 2016 with my family and completed my pharmacy school prerequisites. During this period, I started working as pharmacy technician at Covenant Medical Center. My passion for teamwork and leadership grew in this role and followed me through my years of pharmacy school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy.

"Within the PharmD program, I set myself academic goals that I have been blessed to achieve," continued Cullins. "My passion for critical care and oncology grew as I progressed through didactic and experiential curriculum. I hope to utilize my hospital pharmacy skillset to serve my Lubbock community as soon as I am licensed. In my final semester of the program, I turn my sights to preparing for the NAPLEX and MPJE. Looking back, I am so thankful to all of those who have taught me and for the experience I’ve had. Going forward, I know that this same network and experience will help me to become the pharmacist I’ve always wanted to be."

This honor was presented April 4 during the 2025 Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacy (TSHP) Annual Seminar at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas in Irving, TX. TSHP’s Annual Seminar is the largest educational and networking meeting of student pharmacists, career pharmacists, new practitioners, technicians, and industry professionals in Texas.
