The TSHP Research & Education Foundation offers 22 Scholarships on an annual basis for a total of more than $17,000. View the available scholarships and their criteria below.

The Micheline & Bourjois Abboud Scholarship is created to provide qualified non-Texas residents with an opportunity to complete a pharmacy education. The goal of the Abboud Scholarship is to promote academic excellence and to afford an opportunity for a student who moved to Texas to pursue a degree in pharmacy with financial need to reach their fullest potential.

A $500 scholarship is provided this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a full-time student at any college/school of pharmacy in Texas, and
  • Be a member of the TSHP student chapter at their school/college of pharmacy, and
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in their professional coursework, and
  • Have completed an undergraduate degree or pre-pharmacy coursework at a college outside of Texas, or completed of high school outside of Texas.
Additional information required during the online application process: documentation of completion of an undergraduate degree, pre-pharmacy coursework or a high school diploma from outside the state of Texas.

The Austin Area Society of Health-System Pharmacists Scholarship was established in 1998. The scholarship is awarded to students currently enrolled at The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in either a professional or post-graduate degree program. The scholarship will be awarded on “need” basis, not scholastic achievement. Members of the University of Texas Student chapter of TSHP shall be given priority over all other students. In the event that there are no AASHP members who apply for a scholarship in this category at The University of Texas, the scholarship shall be awarded to a member of AACP who is enrolled in a post-entry degree program at another School/College of Pharmacy.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year (P2, P3 or P4) student enrolled in the Pharm.D. program at the University of Texas, and
  • Be currently working in a health-system pharmacy or have worked in one while attending the school/college of pharmacy.
Graduate Students should:
  • Be enrolled in a post-entry level degree program in pharmacy, and
  • Be a member of the Austin Area Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
If no applicants meet the criteria above, the Scholarship Committee will pick an alternative applicant from other scholarship applicants.

The Richard Cadle Mentoring Scholarship for Pharmacy Leadership was created in 2017 after the sudden passing of the scholarship’s namesake. Dr. Richard Cadle cared deeply about mentoring the future pharmacy leaders of America as shown with his dedication to students, residents, colleagues and his extensive involvement in the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) and its Gulf Coast Affiliate. Throughout his distinguished career he started the first five residency programs at the Michael E. DeBakey Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Houston, Texas. As a proud member of the United States Navy, he served his country by helping teach new generations of brave young men and women the value of hard work and perseverance. This scholarship is the first of its kind to be solely dedicated to helping pharmacy residents throughout Texas. Dr. Cadle provided an incredible amount of encouragement and assistance to so many people and we hope this scholarship fund will help to carry his legacy for future pharmacy generations to come.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants Should:

  • Be a current pharmacy resident in Texas
  • Be a member of their local TSHP Chapter Affiliate
  • Demonstrate compassion and spirit of helping others by being active in community service
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities as evidenced by their contributions to local, state and national organizations
Preference will be given to:
  • Current or honorably discharged United States servicemen and women
  • Gulf Coast Chapter applicants
  • Applicants from Harris, Waller, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Galveston, Montgomery, Liberty and Chambers Counties.

The Central Texas Society of Health System Pharmacists Scholarship was established in 2003 for a pharmacy student completing rotations in the San Antonio area. Preference is given to those students who have scheduled rotations in the San Antonio area or are from the San Antonio Area.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be an active member of CTSHP, TSHP and their pharmacy school/college chapter, and
  • Be a fourth year student at a Texas college or school/college of pharmacy with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher, and
  • Be active in community service, (e.g. have organized or participated in programs with fellow pharmacy students to do hypertension screening in shopping malls or community centers, or a “brown bag” program, or has given lectures on prescription, OTC, or herbal medications at community centers.), and
  • Be currently working in a health-system pharmacy or have worked in one while attending pharmacy school.

The Metroplex Society of Health-System Pharmacists established a scholarship in memory of Grace Dyan Coggin, granddaughter of TSHP Executive Director Paul F. Davis and his wife Beth in 2009. Grace passed away at the age of 2 years, 5 months as a result of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic disease that strikes about 1 in 6,000 babies each year. About 1 in 40 adults carry the gene. SMA affects muscles throughout the body, although the proximal muscles are often most severely affected. Preference will be given to students who are afflicted with or have had to overcome a physical disability.

One $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a full-time student at Texas college/school of pharmacy, and
  • Be a member of the TSHP student chapter, and
  • Demonstrate compassion and love of humanity through community service, and
  • Be in good academic standing.

The Celso and Matiana M. Cuéllar Sr. Scholarship was established in 2002 by TSHP Past President (1999-2000) Lourdes M. Cuéllar in honor and memory of her parents. This scholarship was created to provide qualified students of Hispanic heritage with an opportunity to complete a pharmacy education. The goal of the Cuéllar Scholarship is to promote academic excellence and to afford an opportunity for a student with financial need to reach their fullest potential. Mr. and Mrs. Cuéllar grew up during the Great Depression and highly valued education. They saw education as a pathway toward personal fulfillment and contribution to society, and supported their three children in aspiring to rewarding professional careers. This mantra was also passed along to many other extended family members and children within their community in San Antonio, Texas. Lourdes fondly recalls that she, as well as her siblings were “carded” – i.e. received an I.D. card to the public library as soon as they could read. Preference will be given to students of Hispanic background; if there are no eligible Hispanic students, the scholarship is open to students of other minority heritage.

A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a full-time student at any Texas college/school of pharmacy, and
  • Be a member of the TSHP student chapter at their school/college of pharmacy, and
  • Demonstrate compassion and spirit of helping others by being active in school and community service, and
  • Be in good academic standing. GPA may be considered in the selection process.

One of the four El Paso Society of Health-System scholarships was designated in 2009 in honor of TSHP Past President (1999-2000) and R&E Foundation President (2002-2010), Lourdes M. Cuéllar. Lourdes has been a Director of Pharmacy at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston for many years, and is an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Houston and at the University of the Incarnate Word Colleges of Pharmacy. She has served on many state and national Boards and State of Texas health advisory boards by appointments from Governors Bush and Perry. She has contributed to the profession of pharmacy as a leader, practitioner, educator, preceptor and mentor to many students and pharmacists. She has been the recipient of TSHP’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, and is recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. This scholarship honors her long-time dedication to students and pharmacy education in Texas.

The Lourdes M. Cuéllar scholarship was created to provide qualified students of Hispanic heritage, with an opportunity to complete a pharmacy education. The goal of this scholarship is to promote academic excellence and to afford an opportunity for a student with financial need to reach their goal of becoming an exemplary pharmacist practitioner. It is awarded annually to a student native to the El Paso area attending the University of the Incarnate Word John & Rita Feik School of Pharmacy. If no applicants meet these criteria; preference will be given to students from the El Paso (preferably) or West Texas (see map) area attending any accredited college of pharmacy; or other student the scholarship committee feels meets the requirements.

In addition, preference will be given to students of Hispanic background meeting the above said criteria; if there are no eligible Hispanic students, the scholarship is open to students of other minority heritage.

A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a full-time student at the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy, and
  • Be a student member of TSHP or their state ASHP-affiliate chapter, and
  • Demonstrate compassion and the spirit of helping others by being active in community service, especially with the economically disadvantaged or medically underserved, and
  • Be in good academic standing. GPA may be considered in the selection process, and
  • Be a native of the El Paso area or West Texas (see map), as well as New Mexico to the West and Oklahoma to the North.
Additional information required during the online application process: proof of residency from the El Paso area (Driver’s license or high school diploma – other documentation may be considered if provided, but these are the preferred documents).

The James T. Doluisio Scholarship was established in 1998 and funded in 2001 in honor of the former Dean of The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and Hoechst Roussel Chair, James T. Doluisio. He served as dean for 25 years, 1973-1998. A native of Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Purdue University, Dr. Doluisio came to Texas from the faculty of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. He is appreciated by former students and colleagues for his great love of the University and pharmacy students. During his tenure he developed the college into one of the top ranked colleges in the United States.

No scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a student of any Texas college/school of Pharmacy who has demonstrated leadership qualities as well as academic excellence, and
  • Be a student member of TSHP.

The El Paso Area Society of Health-System Pharmacists Scholarship was initially established in 2002 to recognize outstanding pharmacy leadership skills for students native to the El Paso area attending any accredited pharmacy school of their choice. With the advent of the newly established UTEP SOP, this scholarship has been re-named to provide scholarship opportunities for pharmacy students who are native to the El Paso area and are attending UTEP. If no applicants meet these criteria, preference will be given to pharmacy students native to the El Paso or West Texas (see map) area attending any accredited pharmacy school, or other student the scholarship committee feels meets the requirements.

A $1,000 general scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be enrolled in the UTEP SOP or UTEP-UT COOP, and
  • Be in good academic standing - GPA may be considered in the selection process, and
  • Be able to demonstrate leadership qualities in school and/or community activities, and
  • Be a student member of TSHP or their state ASHP-affiliate chapter, and
  • Be a native of the El Paso area (preferably) or West Texas (see map), as well as New Mexico to the West and Oklahoma to the North.
Additional information required during the online application process: proof of residency from the El Paso/West Texas area (Driver’s license or high school diploma – other documentation may be considered if provided, but these are the preferred documents).

The Eustacio Galvan Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 to honor Eustacio Galvan, a Past President of the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (1971-1972) and a former member of the Board of Directors of the R&E Foundation. Eustacio was a local leader in health-system pharmacy practice in the Houston-Galveston area while serving for 34 years as the Director of Pharmacy at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. A 1959 graduate of the University of Texas College of Pharmacy, Eustacio promoted improvements in the practice of pharmacy during his entire professional career. Preference will be given to applicants who are of Hispanic/Latino descent.

A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a member (student section) of TSHP, and
  • Be a full-time pharmacy student at any college/school of pharmacy in Texas, and
  • Have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in their professional coursework.

The Phyllis B. Ginsburg Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997 in memory of the mother of TSHP member and Past-President, Diane Ginsburg.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be enrolled at any Texas c/school of pharmacy, and
  • Be a student member of TSHP student chapter at their school or college, and
  • Demonstrate commitment and compassion for others and the pharmacy profession through community service.

The Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists Leadership Scholarship was established in 2000 to recognize a pharmacist or pharmacy student in an undergraduate or graduate degree program based on leadership, service and academic standing.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be active in school and community service, and.
  • Be a member of the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and
  • Demonstrate leadership skills. (Examples: class officer, organizational officer or representative, or community leadership, etc.), and
  • Be active in health-system pharmacy organizational activities. (Examples: monthly meeting attendance, student Board representative, etc.), and
  • Be in good academic standing. GPA may be considered in the selection process, and
  • The applicant should not have received a GCSHP scholarship in the past.

The Jon Peyton Hudlow Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 through funding from the General Fund in memory of Mr. Hudlow (1946-1995). He was a Past President of TSHP and the R&E Foundation who died at the age of 48.

The Mark Tamble Memorial Scholarship was established in April 1996 in memory of Mark Tamble (1930-1995), who was the District Sales Manager of Smith, Kline & French. He received the TSHP Award of Honor and received the TSHP Industry Service Award twice. Mr. Tamble also served on the R&E Foundation Board for many years.

These Hudlow and Tamble scholarships were merged into one combined scholarship in 2013.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Demonstrate good academics with a GPA above 2.5, and
  • Demonstrate a concern for quality patient care through community service, and
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, and
  • Be currently enrolled in the pharmacy program at a Texas school/college of pharmacy.

The Gene Lake Scholarship was established in 2001 in honor of Gene Lake, who served as a member of the R&E Foundation Board of Directors and as Fundraising Chair. Gene received the TSHP Distinguished Service Award and the TSHP Industry Service Award for his support of pharmacy in the West Texas region while working for Abbott Laboratories. Preference given to students who live in the West Texas (see map) area Mr. Lake served during his career with Abbott.

A $250 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be enrolled at any Texas school/college of Pharmacy, and
  • Be an active student member of TSHP, and
  • Demonstrate commitment and compassion for others and the pharmacy profession through community service, and
  • Be from or reside in West Texas (see map), as well as New Mexico to the West and Oklahoma to the North.
Additional information required during the online application process: proof of residency from the West Texas area (Driver’s license or high school diploma – other documentation may be considered if provided, but these are the preferred documents).

The Gene Lake Technician Scholarship was established in 2015. The scholarship is awarded to students currently enrolled in a technician training program.

A $250 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be enrolled in any technician training program in Texas
  • Be a technician member of TSHP
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a Texas resident with a permanent U.S. residency status
  • Be in good academic standing in the program in which they are enrolled
  • Have passion and initiative to improve the health of our communities
Note: A preference will be given to applicants who are or will work in an underserved area.

The Robert G. Leonard Memorial Scholarship is presented to a student currently enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Bob Leonard was one of the original faculty members to bring the Pharm.D. program to Texas and to UT when he joined the faculty in 1973. His brilliant career, work as an outstanding educator and active involvement in professional organizational life was cut short by his untimely death in 1981.

A $500 scholarship will be provided this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a member of the TSHP Student Section, and
  • Be enrolled in the Pharm.D. program at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, and
  • Be active in professional undergraduate activities, including their TSHP student chapter,
  • Have a grade point average of 3.00 or better, and
  • Demonstrate commitment and compassion for others and the pharmacy profession through community service.

The Glenda Lawson McRee Scholarship was established in 2002 in memory of TSHP Past President Glenda Lawson McRee. Glenda was an advocate for mentoring and furthering professional opportunities for students. She served as the R&E Foundation Scholarship Chair for many years and helped develop the scholarship program. The nomination must be supported by a reference supporting the nominee’s qualifications for the scholarship from the SSHP chapter faculty advisor.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be enrolled at any Texas school/college of pharmacy, and
  • Be member of TSHP, student chapter, and
  • Demonstrate commitment and compassion for others and the pharmacy profession, through community service.
Additional information required during the online application process: one letter of reference MUST be from the SSHP faculty advisor.

The Metroplex Society of Health-System Pharmacists Scholarship is for pharmacy students from or resident in the Metroplex area (see map). Preference will be given to P3 and P4 students undertaking at least one clinical rotation in the Dallas/Ft. Worth (Metroplex) area.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Preferably be a member of MSHP as well as their pharmacy school chapter, and
  • Be a student at a Texas college/school of pharmacy, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher, and
  • Be from or reside in the area which MSHP serves (see TSHP component chapter map).
Additional information required during the online application process: documentation from your school/college of pharmacy to indicate clinical rotation assignment(s) in the Metroplex area and/or proof of residency from the Metroplex area (Driver’s license or high school diploma – other documentation may be considered if provided, but these are the preferred documents).

The Frederick W. Mullin Endowed Pharmacy Scholarship Fund, established in 2024, by Frederick W. Mullin. Throughout his 31 years of service to the TSHP Research & Education Foundation, Fred remained steadfast in his commitment to advancing healthcare through the support of pharmacy research, education, and continuous professional development. His passion for these causes not only enriched the Foundation but has also left an indelible mark on the broader healthcare community.

A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants shall:

  • Be a student at Texas college/school of pharmacy, and
  • Be enrolled in a full-time pharmacy degree (PharmD) program, or
  • Be enrolled in a MS student in a pharmacy program, or
  • Be enrolled in a Ph.D. student in a pharmacy program.
Ideal Candidates should:
  • Be a member of TSHP; and
  • Be an exemplary applicant, demonstrated through:
    • Academic excellence
    • Pharmacy community engagement
    • Dedicated to advancing the pharmacy profession
Recipients of this scholarship shall not be selected based upon ethnic, gender or geographical (beyond Texas) restrictions. Proof of enrollment in a Texas college/school of pharmacy program is required.

One of the four El Paso Area Society of Health-System Pharmacists scholarships is designated for a pharmacy student native to the El Paso area who are attending Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Pharmacy (TTUHSCSOP). The scholarship was established by the El Paso Society in 2007. It honors Michael Patry, son of Dr. Roland and Janice Patry. Michael would have entered his sophomore year at Amarillo High School when he passed away on July 31, 1999 from a heart attack. He was a member of the Amarillo High School Band and an avid horseman, winning many prizes and ribbons in hunter classes of competition. Dr. Patry is a Past President of TSHP and the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists, as well as a former member of the R&E Foundation Board of Directors. Dr. Patry was Regional Dean at Texas Tech University Health Sciences School of Pharmacy in Dallas and has been a strong advocate for EPASHP initiatives. Preference is given to a native of the greater El Paso area attending TTUHSCSOP. If no applicants meet these criteria, preference will be given to pharmacy students native to the El Paso area or West Texas (see map) area attending any accredited pharmacy school, or other student the scholarship committee feels meets the requirements.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a full-time student at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy, and
  • Be a student member of TSHP or their state ASHP-affiliate chapter, and
  • Demonstrate compassion and the spirit of helping others by being active in community service especially with the economically disadvantaged or medically underserved, and
  • Be in good academic standing – GPA may be considered in the selection process, and
  • Be a native of the El Paso area (preferably) or West Texas (see map) which is defined as bounded by the following counties on the East: Wichita, Archer, Young, Stephens, Eastland, Brown, McCullough, Menard, Kimble, Edwards, Real, Uvalde, Dimmitt and Webb, as well as New Mexico to the West and Oklahoma to the North.

The Sidney Phillips Memorial Scholarship was established in 2022 in honor of Sidney Phillips, who was a past President of the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Dr. Phillips served in various leadership positions in TSHP since he was in pharmacy school and was a longtime member whose dedication to the Texas pharmacy profession was actively demonstrated to all who knew him. Dr. Phillips dedicated his career to health system leadership for small and large hospitals. He was also firm believer and supporter of advocacy on all levels.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be an active member of TSHP, and
  • Be a native Texan (born in Texas), and
  • Be in good academic standing. GPA may be considered in the selection process,
  • Career interest in working a hospital, and
  • Be a full-time pharmacy student at a Texas school or college of pharmacy; preference will be given to students currently enrolled in the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy.

One of the four El Paso Scholarships is designated for a pharmacy student attending Texas Southern University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Dr. Piñón’s alma mater. It was established by the El Paso Society to honor the contributions of Dr. Michael Piñón in 2006. He is an Associate Director for Medical Affairs at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and served as President of EPASHP from 2001-6. He also served on the TSHP R&E Board of Directors from 2008-17 and was honored as Distinguished Alumnus of the Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2006. Preference is given to a pharmacy student native of the greater El Paso area attending Texas Southern, if no applicants meet this criteria; preference will be given to students native to El Paso (preferably) or West Texas (see map) area attending any accredited college of pharmacy; or other student the scholarship committee feels meets the requirements.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a full-time pharmacy student at the Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and
  • Be a student member of TSHP or their state ASHP-affiliate chapter, and
  • Be able to demonstrate leadership qualities in school and/or community activities; along with compassion and the spirit of helping the economically disadvantaged or medically underserved, and
  • Be in good academic standing. GPA may be considered in the selection process, and
  • Be a native from the El Paso area or West Texas (see map), as well as New Mexico to the West and Oklahoma to the North.

The Sandra Evans Webb Scholarship was established in 2000 in honor of Sandra Evans Webb, who was a former Executive Vice President of the TSHP R&E Foundation. Sandra served on the University of Houston College of Pharmacy faculty for a number of years.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded this year.

Applicants should:

  • Be a member of the TSHP Student Section, and
  • Be enrolled in the final year (P4) of the Pharm.D. program at the University of Houston, and
  • Have a grade point average of 3.00 or better.
